Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap)

An LP is performed to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid and to measure its pressure. CSF is the fluid that circulates around and through the brain and spinal cord. Analysis of the CSF can help detect infection, inflammation, and other diseases of the central nervous system. This procedure is done by inserting a thin needle into the spinal canal space, puncturing the sac containing the fluid, and draining off some of the fluid through the needle.

This test takes about 30 minutes, including preparation time. Our staff is very experienced and well able to support our patients and assist our doctors during this procedure.
